In this Storybook review, three young girls discover in Cocoa Tea and Honey that despite having varied tones of brown skin, they are all beautiful and enjoy being friends.
The Good Stuff
This storybook makes me smile. Let’s start with the title, Cocoa Tea and Honey. The title is such a beautiful way to describe different shades of black skin tones. Simply said, the author didn’t end there. She also adds poetic language that captivates you and makes you beam at each character. Throughout this storybook, three young friends laugh, explore, and play together at different times and seasons. It is clear that these girls are very close and just adore each other’s company. These adorable young ladies love one other’s company and embrace their unique features.
As an African American, I truly enjoyed the illustrations in this book. In the past, I have not personally seen African American children portrayed in an authentic way that is visually appealing. I love their curly hair, clothes, eyes, and many other great features. The warm and unique art style of this book allows the writer’s words to come to life.
Conclusion: Cocoa Tea and Honey
